Special Needs - ICAN

ICAN at South Acton Children’s Centre I CAN at South Acton Children’s Centre opened in April 2004 to provide integrated education and speech and language therapy to pre-school children with speech, language and communication difficulties. The provision is one of a national network developed by ICAN the charity that helps children communicate, in partnership with Ealing LA and Ealing PCT. There are currently two other similar provisions in Ealing. The children are referred to the provision by their local speech and language therapist with their parents’ consent. Each provision has a specialist teacher, a speech and language therapist and a nursery nurse, who work collaboratively and intensively with up to ten children with speech and language difficulties in their nursery setting. An enriched language environment with signs and symbols allows them to develop their language skills at the same time as they enjoy and benefit from a mainstream nursery environment. Each child has individual education / language targets which are met through small group work, focus activities and / or individual / pair work.  In addition to working directly with children, the staff involve parents in helping their own children by working with them in a variety of ways e.g. parent workshops, review meetings, sending newsletters with signs and songs and books home, coffee mornings etc. After finishing at the ICAN centre most children have gone on to their mainstream schools with some support for their speech and language difficulties. Parents report a high level of satisfaction with the service offered.
